Henigan, Ruffin, Marusak notch feature wins at RPM

CRANDALL, Texas (July 23, 2021) —  Regional Modified standout Chris Henigan, open-wheel star Bobby Ruffin and stock car ace Michael Marusak all posted wins in their respective divisions, as Round 11 of the KR Cup was run Friday night at RPM Speedway.

Henigan drove to victory in the 20-lap USRA Modified A Main; Ruffin overcame mechanical issues to claim the USRA Limited Modified feature, while Marusak prevailed in a hotly-contested USRA Factory Stock feature.

Dakota Raines (Eco Mods) and Joseph Gunnels (Tuners) were also feature winners on a beautiful summer night for racing at the popular oval in north Texas.

Henigan, of Marshall, Texas, used the outside line to his advantage to take command in the early going. Tommy Davis Jr. started fourth, came on strong mid-race and finished second, while Ruffin (doing double duty) filled out the podium in third. Jack Sartain and Jason Sartain completed the top five.

“The cushion was there tonight, but it was a fine line, ” Henigan told track co-promoter Kevin Rogers in Honeycutt Sand & Gravel Victory Lane. “We were almost hitting the wall at one point, it was a little bit scary. I have to thank all of my great sponsors for their support, and for making this win possible.”

Finishing sixth through 10th in the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Modified feature were Dylan Glass, Lance Plant, Bradley Bracey, Jeff Needham and Charlie Thieme. Only one caution slowed the pace at lap nine when Bobby McCool hit the outside retaining wall and came to a stop in Turn 4.

Ruffin, of Crandall, managed to somehow hold off a hard-charging Justin Nabors despite a failing car to prevail in his Limited Modified contest. Nabors settled for second, while Kyle Wilkins put in a solid effort to secure third. Blaine Smith and Kevin Simpson finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

“Man, I can not believe that,” Ruffin said in Victory Lane. “That car just would not run in third gear. I blew up the transmission that we run in second gear. I hated to do that, but with some quick thinking we managed to pull it off. It feels good any time you can get a win here.”

Finishing sixth through 10th in the Ken Parker Services USRA Limited Modified A Main were Bobby Ortega, Tommy Davis Jr., Ricky Haney, Justin Vaughan and James Farmer. The Limited Mods always keep fans entertained at RPM Speedway, and Friday night's feature was no exception.

Marusak, of Ennis, put in the performance of his career to claim the Factory Stock feature, wheeling all the way from dead-last (13th) to claim top honors. Walter Hamilton led the first 14 laps but spun out in Turn 2, then did it again in Turn 4 just two laps later.

Chris Davis inherited the lead and led the field into Turn 1 on the restart. Just as it looked like Davis would score another win, both Marusak and Tyler Killingsworth got by in the closing laps. Tristan McCullough crossed the stripe in fourth, while Don Jensen rounded out the top five.

“I owe this one to my crew tonight,” an emotional and elated Marusak said in Victory Lane. “We broke the motor sitting in the staging lanes before the heat race, and they were able to get it fixed and make it out for the feature. My son and my brother put a heck of setup under this car, so I want to thank them.”

Finishing sixth through 10th in the By-Line Surveying USRA Factory Stock feature were Chance Shelton, Jerry Cowart, Darby Shelby, Hamilton and Landon Miller. Three cautions slowed the pace, one for Joe Findling's contact with the wall lap lap 2 along with a pair by the spinning car of Hamilton.
