DayMotorSports.com Race Recap: Dillard, Collins, Garland win at 105 Speedway

CLEVELAND, Texas (July 23, 2022) — Regional short track star Caleb Dillard, open-wheel sensation Justin Collins and Stock car ace JT Garland all won features in their respective divisions, as officials hosted a full card of racing headlined by the Short Track Super Series on Saturday at 105 Speedway.

Dillard powered to victory in a thrilling 25-lap A Main debut for the Northeast-style Big Block Mods; Collins prevailed in a hotly-contested tussle for Limited Modifieds; while Garland came out on top in a talent-filled Factory Stock feature.

Jesse McNorton (Street Stock); Mike Copeland (Pure Stock); and Maverick Elkins (Sportsman Micros) were also feature winners on a beautiful night for racing in southeast Texas.

Dillard, of Robeline, Louisiana, started eighth on the 13-car grid, powered around the outside of early leader Darrell Fowlkes to take command at lap 17 and pulled steadily away to earn top honors. Fowlkes settled for second, while Richard Holt filled out the podium.

Tommy Rascoe (Deberry, TX) and Alan Ray Myers (Sibley, La.) completed the top five.

“I knew I had a pretty good car,” Dillard said. “This car just doesn't really shine until the track gets black and takes some rubber. Luckily, I hit the setup right on the head tonight. What a great race track; I told my Dad I've run on a lot of tracks, but that's probably the most fun I've ever had in a race car.

“We could race clean, nobody ever touched, it was perfect. That's as good as you can get a race track.”

Finishing sixth through 10th in the 25-lap Ollie's Bargain Outlet STSS A Main were Anthony Meek, Keith Badiali, Thomas Holt, Kody Keimig and Corey Oltz. Only one caution slowed the pace at lap one when Myers' machine briefly came to a stop in Turn 2.

Dillard's margin of victory over Fowlkes was a whopping 4.548 seconds, as the 'Robeline Rocket' had them covered on this night.

Collins, a hometown boy from Cleveland, drove past early leader Jason Downey to take over the point at lap 13 and hung on for top honors. Downey, one of the top guns at 105 Speedway whenever they run, crossed the stripe in second, while Adam Bartels filled out the podium.

Joseph Pontin Jr. (Hockley, TX) and hard-charger Donald Cain (Willis, TX) rounded out the top five.

“That was a lot of fun,” Collins said. “We've been working hard, doing better and now it's finally starting to pay off for us. Hopefully we can go out there and get us a few more wins before it's over. “

Finishing sixth through 10th in the Limited Modified feature were Zane Goff, Jacob Martin, William Jones, Darryl Seals and Randy Bridges. One caution slowed the pace at lap five for a minor spin. Collins' margin of victory over Downey was a sizable 2.733 seconds, as he was checking out quickly.

Garland, another local favorite from Cleveland, led all 20 laps of his feature in convincing fashion. Calvin Tucker applied big pressure in the closing laps but fell just short to claim runner-up honors, while Robert Jessup filled out the podium in third.

Jayden Pina (Humble, Texas) and Steven Thornton (Plantersville, Texas) completed the top five.

“I need to thank Brandon for letting me drive this car, that was a blast,” Garland said. “I also want to thank Tyler Moore, Big Ed, Eddie's Plumbing, Jesse McNorton and everybody else who helps me out.”

Finishing sixth through 10th in the Factory Stock A Main were Justin McClelland, Tyler Vanarsdale, Olon Holder IV, Austin Crocker and Justin Johnson. Three cautions slowed the pace (at the initial start, laps 9, 16), the first before a lap was completed. Garland's margin of victory was a scant .769 seconds.

While the car count for the visiting STSS Big Block Modifieds was light (14 were on hand, one broke in his Heat and didn't make the A Main), 103 entries filled the pits on Saturday spread across six classes. With 25 Pure Stocks on hand leading the way, it's clear racing is healthy in southeast Texas for 2022.
